Banff is the North American answer to a Texan or Floridian summer: 70°F days, 45°F mornings, no humidity, and a walkable townsite of about 1.5km end-to-end. Book Lake Louise shuttle slots two months ahead — June parking at the lake is sold out by 7am.
June vs. July vs. September
June: wildflowers, fewer crowds, some snow still on Moraine Lake road (opens mid-June). July–August: peak crowds and 30% pricier hotels. Early September: the underrated pick — larches start turning, mornings hit 35°F, and trails are empty.
Stay in the town, day-trip to the lakes
Banff townsite is the practical base: walkable to dinner, on the Parks Canada shuttle network for Lake Louise and Moraine. The Chateau Lake Louise is the splurge but isolates you. Stay in town and shuttle out.
Shoulder-season comfort layering
A packable down puffer for sunrise hikes, a t-shirt for afternoon, and a light rain shell. Skip the heavy fleece. Sunscreen at altitude is the most-forgotten item — UV is brutal at 1,400m even at 60°F.
