Copenhagen in May is the European city break done right: 15 hours of daylight, hotel rates 30% below the July peak, and Noma-orbit dinners that take walk-ins on the right Tuesday. The city is so flat and bike-friendly that you'll cover 20km a day without noticing.

Rent the bike, skip the metro

Donkey Republic or a hotel-loaner bike. The dedicated cycle lanes mean a tourist can ride from Vesterbro to Refshaleøen in 25 minutes without ever crossing a car. The metro is a backup for rainy hours only.

Where to eat without a 3-month reservation

Apollo Kantine, Hart Bageri, Atelier September for daytime; Pony, Restaurant Barr, and Sanchez for dinner. Most take same-day bookings if you call at 10am. Skip the Noma waitlist — these are the better-value siblings of the same kitchens.

Day-trip to Louisiana

The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art is 35 minutes by S-tog north of Copenhagen — a half-day trip that's the equal of any city museum and sits in a sculpture garden on the Øresund.
