London is most pleasant the four weeks before summer break. Mid-May to mid-June: dry-ish days in the low 60s°F, Royal Parks at peak chestnut bloom, West End still in its winter season, and a 30% discount on the August rate for any decent hotel. The Tube handles it; you can walk most of central London faster anyway.
Pick one neighborhood and walk
Pick Marylebone for boutiques and pubs, Bloomsbury for museums and Georgian squares, or South Bank for the Thames Path and Tate Modern. London punishes hotel-hopping; one base for 4–5 nights is the right shape.
When to use the Tube vs. walk
Walk anything under 30 minutes — the Tube map distorts central distances. Covent Garden to Leicester Square is 4 minutes on foot, 12 on the Underground after you queue for the lift. Use Citymapper, not Google Maps, for London.
Theatre still beats streaming
Same-day TKTS booth in Leicester Square for half-price West End. Almeida in Islington and the Bridge Theatre near London Bridge consistently program the most interesting work outside the West End — book a week ahead.
