Porto in November is what travelers mean when they say 'shoulder season': the summer crowds have gone, the harvest is in, port houses run small private tastings, and the weather sits at perfect walking temperatures all month. Pack a light rain shell and you'll need almost nothing else.
Why November beats October
Hotel rates drop another 20% after All Saints' Day (Nov 1), the harvest tastings begin, and the rain — though more frequent — comes in 30-minute bursts rather than the all-day systems of January. Walking the Ribeira after a 4pm shower is the single best half hour you'll have in Iberia.
Stay on the Gaia side at least once
Vila Nova de Gaia — the port-house bank across the river — is where the best sunset views are. The Yeatman is the destination hotel; Vincci Ponte de Ferro is the value pick under €140. Cross the Dom Luís I bridge on foot to dinner; you'll do it three times in two days.
Book port houses, not bar tastings
Graham's, Taylor's, and Cálem all offer guided tastings under €25. The smaller houses (Kopke, Andresen) offer 6-flight verticals for €40 that bar tastings can't match. Book directly — third-party tour aggregators take a 30% cut.
