The Highlands in summer stay stubbornly in the low 60s°F — the coolest big landscape in Britain and the only way to see Skye, Glencoe, and the northwest peninsulas properly. Rent a car in Inverness, drive the NC500 counter-clockwise, and give it eight nights minimum. The midges are real; the sunset over Torridon at 10pm is worth every bite.
NC500, but slowly
The North Coast 500 is a 516-mile loop from Inverness. Guidebooks say 5 days; the honest number is 8. Cut to Applecross, Torridon, and Assynt if you have to pick. The single-track roads with passing places take twice the time Google Maps predicts.
Where to stay for a first trip
Torridon (west) for mountains and lochs; Ullapool (northwest) for coast and ferries to Lewis; Aviemore (central) for family-friendly and the Cairngorms. Skip Inverness itself — it's the launchpad, not the destination.
Midges: the honest warning
Highland midges swarm June through early September, worst at dawn and dusk near still water. Smidge repellent (not DEET — midges laugh at DEET) is the local pick. A midge head-net is £4 and non-optional for evening loch walks.
