St. John's is the summer city almost nobody thinks of and everyone should. Mid-60s to low-70s all July, a walkable downtown built on a hill above a working harbor, and the East Coast Trail — 336 km of cliffside singletrack — leaves from the city limits. Fly direct from Halifax, Toronto, or London; you're closer to Dublin than to Vancouver.
Signal Hill, then downtown
Start at Signal Hill for the harbor overlook and the Cabot Tower (2 hours round-trip on foot from downtown), then walk down George Street for a pub crawl. It's the most concentrated live-music street in Canada — 20+ bars in three blocks, all easy walks back to a hotel.
Day-trip for whales and puffins
The Witless Bay Ecological Reserve is 45 minutes south. From late June through early August, humpbacks feed inside the bay and puffins nest on Gull Island. O'Brien's Boat Tours runs 2-hour trips from Bay Bulls; book the 9:30am slot for calmer seas.
Pack for the North Atlantic, not July
Fog rolls in fast, and 65°F in a sea breeze feels like 55°F. A merino long-sleeve, one windproof shell, and grippy shoes handle the whole trip. Skip shorts — you'll never wear them.
