Taipei flips its weather between June (95°F and 90% humidity, basically uninhabitable for walking) and January (a perfect 60–68°F, low humidity, dry-ish). January is the only window where you can walk Da'an, eat at three night markets, and hike Elephant Mountain in the same day without changing shirts. Book over Lunar New Year only if you've checked the dates — Taipei half-empties out.
Da'an as the base
Da'an is the residential-meets-foodie district: tree-lined streets, the city's best coffee, Yongkang Street's beef noodle shops, and a 12-minute MRT ride to anywhere. Hotels here run 30% under Xinyi's luxury blocks and walk better.
Night markets that are worth the line
Raohe is the best food market for a single visit. Tonghua (Linjiang) is the local pick — half the size, no tour buses, same standard. Shilin is the famous one and the one to skip.
Pingxi day-trip for lanterns
1 hour by TRA train. Floating lanterns over Shifen Old Street are touristy but genuinely beautiful at dusk. Pair with Jiufen for evening tea-house views back to the coast. Skip if it's raining — the lanterns don't fly wet.
